Due for release in the first quarter 2010, we have the Nokia 7230, a handset that the Finnish giant hope will help to freshen their rather stale looking line-up. Available in either Graphite or Hot Pink, the Nokia 7230 is a compact, slide style device, which runs on the Nokia S40 operating system. This is the system used by such popular Nokia devices as the Nokia 6303, 6500, 6600, etc. The S40 OS is pretty stable these days, and works well, and offers a good range of customisation options. This is one area where Nokia have always been at the forefront, since the early days of GSM devices it has been easy to customise Nokia handsets with screen icons, wallpapers, ring tone and text alerts. Even now some handsets from leading manufacturers such as Samsung fail to offer decent customisation options, particularly in regards to SMS alerts.
The Nokia 7230 measures up well, coming in at 98 x 48 x 15mm, and weighing in at 100g. The screen is an area where Nokia usually score pretty well, but instead of the standard 16 million colour offering, the 7230 will ship with a lower resolution 256,000 colour TFT QVGA display, measuring 2.4 inches. The layout of the keyboard is a simple affair, underneath the main display is a traditional five way D-Pad, flanked on either side by two soft option keys and send/end call keys. Sliding the handset up reveals a well spaced standard 12 key Alpha numeric keypad.
The 7230 comes complete with a 3.2 Megapixel camera, enabled to record video at QCIF resolution, up to 15 fps. Not the best performance from a Nokia device, but should work well enough if you send the video clips via MMS. Upload to YouTube or other online video services, and the video may look a bit choppy and blocky. Connectivity to social media is a big thing for manufacturers to latch onto these days, and Nokia have ensured this is available on the 7230. The handset offers integration with a selection of services, such as Flickr, and the Nokia branded Ovi. You can also use the built in web browser to access services such as Facebook and Twitter, plus the handset also supports Nokia messaging, which will allow you to set up a variety of popular email programs on the phone, so you can receive email wherever you go.

Entertainment is an important part of the Nokia 7230, and to help keep you occupied in those dull moments the handset ships with four games included, and more can be downloaded too. The games it comes with are Snake III (It wouldn’t be Nokia without a game of Snake!!), Bounce II, Sudoku II and Rally Start. Further java based games can be downloaded to the device, with the Nokia Ovi Store being a good source for these.
There is no GPS unit on the Nokia 7230, but that doesn’t stop it being able to support Nokia Maps. GPS functionality can be added by connecting the handset to a Bluetooth GPS Dongle, otherwise the Nokia Maps will locate you by using network triangulation. Services such as finding addresses and calculating routes will still work, even without the aid of a GPS unit.
The 7230 has a built in music player, which supports a good choice of music formats, including MP3, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+ and WMA, plus support for MP4 videos. The device has a built in 3.2mm audio jack, so you can use your own headset to listen to music, with Nokia claiming a battery time of up to 27 hours for music playback. As well as wired headsets, you can also listen to music via wireless with support for Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP included on the phone. And for those moments when your own music collection is not enough, or if you want to catch up with the local news station or maybe tune into the Archers on Radio 4, there is a Stereo FM radio included, too.
Internal memory on the 7230 is pretty meagre, just 45MB, in keeping with the overall low cost feel of the phone. However, this can be expanded by the addition of a MicroSD memory card; a 2GB card should ship with the phone, and the handset can support cards up to 16GB.
Overall the Nokia 7230 is a good looking device, and a strong, well rounded set of features. It may not break any ground on new features, but it suits well the market it is aimed at.
