Samsung Genio Pro

The Genio range of handsets from Samsung, starting with the S3650 which is also being sold under the Genio Touch product name, is proving to be very popular. And the main thing customers are talking about is the fashion jackets, the changeable back covers on the device that allow you to change the colour of the phone. These jackets are available in a wide range of colours, some patterned, some plain, and it goes to show that a mobile device is not all about the features, style conscious customers like the option to personalise their phones, too.

As well as looking to attract the fashion conscious young mobile user, Samsung are also aiming the Genio range at people who want to be able to keep in touch with more than just calls, and to aid with the messaging the B5310 offers a full, side slide QWERTY keyboard, with the ideal that the Genio Pro adapts to match the lifestyle of the user.

The keyboard on the Genio Pro is perfectly usable, with a finger friendly layout that will appeal to people who see messaging as an integral part of their daily communication needs. Keys are colour coded, offering an easy way to differentiate the differing functions on each key, and with a good balance the Genio Pro is comfortable to hold with the keyboard fully extended. When closed, the Genio Pro looks very much like its sister handset, the Genio Touch, with a simple navigation key in the middle of the body, directly under the screen, flanked on either side by send/end call keys. The display itself is a full resistive TFT touchscreen, supporting up to 16 million colours and measuring 2.8 inches. The display resolution is a traditional QVGA, 240 x 320, and offers excellent clarity in even the most demanding of lighting environments. The handset itself is fairly compact, measuring 105 x 56.8 x 15.7 mm and weighing in at 135g.

Samsung are generally well regarded in terms of their support for various media formats on the top end products, and the Genio Pro is also well enabled to cope with a wide variety of digital formats, including MP3 and AAC for audio, and MP4 and DivX for video. DivX is one of the more common formats found on video files downloaded from the internet, and it is a real bonus when you have a device that can play such file straight away, without the need to reformat the file first. We also find on the handset a stereo FM radio, with RDS support, which is easy to use and can store the location of your favourite FM radio stations in the handset memory, making switching between stations as easy as the press of a button.

The Samsung Genio Pro B5310 has an adequate 3.2 Megapixel camera, which produces acceptable quality images, certainly good enough to be uploaded to the web, to Flickr, or Facebook. Facebook presentation on the handset works well, and the mobile site is easy to navigate. As well as images, the camera device is capable of recording video clips too, but there is no front facing camera, so no video calls. Memory is well catered for, with an internal memory of 100MB, which can be raised with the addition of MicroSD memory cards. It is also capable of dealing with cards up to 16GB in size, offering plenty of space for all your digital media.

The Pro is a well connected handset, and covers all the main connection options. So we find 3.5G HSDPA on board, offering download speeds of up to 7.2Mbps, backed up by the full trio of non 3G connection options for data, HSCSD, EDGE and GPRS. A welcome option is the inclusion of WiFi, allowing you to take advantage of connecting to the web via your own home WLAN as well as utilising the many Hotspots that are offered at various retail outlets, pubs and café’s. For local data connectivity the Pro offers Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP, and has a micro USB port for connecting to a PC. GPS is also available, ably backed up with aGPS, so you can also use it for navigation purposes.

Considering the Samsung B5310 Genio Pro is a handset aimed at the youth market, with its fashion jackets and funky styling, it is pleasing to see that underneath the handset is a serious product, packed with all the latest mobile technology and will most likely be available on both prepay and contract deals. You shouldn’t have to wait too long for this handset, expected November 2009, watch this space.
