Sometimes the quest for home surround sound is as ignominious as seeking the holy grail. Where do you place all those speakers? Do you have to reshape the room? Philips engineers have tackled that problem. They've managed to take the output from 5 distinct channel amplifiers and placed them in a single speaker called a Soundbar. Within the soundbar, speakers are angled to provide a realistic audio environment that literally emulates sound as if it's coming from all sides. It's 5.1 surround without the mess! Alrighty, hear is the thing. I bought this system not expecting great sound. You get what you pay for, and as long as it was as good as my Ipod speaker, I’d be happy. Well, it wasn’t as good. So very tinney. This thing would give me a headache after just a half hour of listening. I sent it back and dropped a boat load of dough on Paradigm speakers, Oppo dvd and an Onkyo receiver. In all fairness, there is no comparing a $2000 system with a 6 hundi. It is just that, my expectations were not high with the $600 Philips, I really wanted to like this damn thing. It is beautiful in appearance, horrible in long term sound. I say long term, because if I heard this thing cranked up at an appliance store, I would be all, wooo whooo. Take it home and try and get through a couple of dvds without covering your ears. Seriously Philips, wtf? Go ahead and buy this thing if you want, then just try and listen to it for 4 hours without feeling ill.

I bought this soundbar about a year ago and I deeply regret buying it and I’m in the process of getting rid of it, I have nothing good to say about this machine, I mean, picture quality is good and sound is ok, but this thing will freeze 3 out of 10 times and I don’t mean the DVD, NO!, I mean the whole machine will get stuck when I turn it on or when I’m trying to open the console to insert a DVD and I have to unplug it and plug it again so it will reset, I mean, WTF!!!!????, this was a $500 machine when I bought it and it works like a $10 piece of crap, if you want my advise, DO NOT BUY IT!, it may be that I have a lemon, but in all honesty, are you willing to take the risk?

Its the same problem. It s a preety nice system but it s not work. The cd jumps all the time and it takes alot of time to read a simple dvd. It s not worth the money i spent on it

I was excited about this unit but ended up returning it when I discovered it has no optical input. Both of my HDTVs pass-thru sound via an optical output and that’s really what I wanted from a unit. Next time I’ll do a better job reading the specs!
The reason I give the unit 2 stars is because I looked at 12 different HDTVs at the store and every single one of them had an optical out ONLY. To me this is a major flaw in the design of the unit and makes it ill suited to the designed purpose.

Didn’t work out of the box; Called Phillips who thought it was my Samsung TV (even though it worked fine with my other upscaling HDMI DVD player); wanted me to take to some place in SoHo from UES. Brand new, doesn’t work and they want me to bring it in to a shop! No way. Would cost $200 to send back to company and get a new one. Switched cheap HDMI cable, and the DVD started working. The picture and sound are nice; I can’t really tell if its really surround sound, but I can’t hear from one ear, so I’m not that reliable. But the ambisound and picture are nice. The Ipod adapter sucks. Sound comes and goes every 10 seconds. Drives me crazy. Haven’t tried CD’s. Comes with a mount for installing, but no screws, which makes no sense whatsoever. Why not drop an extra 3 bucks to include screws. Doesn’t matter, because if you wanted to install, you would have to knock some major holes in the wall to hide the enormous cable that goes from the subwoofer to the main unit. I don’t know what you’d do with the Ipod adapter. Its a nice, sleek looking unit, but they seemed to not pay attention to some pretty important details (like functionality).
